Raquel Pereira Fisheries and Marine Conservation Officer

Degree in Marine Biology and Biotechnology from the Polytechnic of Leiria and Master in Aquaculture and Fisheries from the University of Algarve. In the last year of her degree, she did an internship in Iceland, at the Icelandic Orca Project, contributing to the monitoring of the killer whales population in Icelandic waters. For her master’s thesis, she studied the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Portuguese fisheries sector, which sparked her interest in fishing communities and sustainable fisheries. She is currently a member of the fisheries and marine protected areas teams. She collaborates in projects such as Fish-X and Mulheres da Ria, working on the ground with the Algarve communities involved. She was also involved in the AMPIC project, which led to the creation of the Algarve Reef Marine Natural Park. In addition to her activities on the ground, she follows the work of fisheries advisory councils and issues related to marine protected areas.
