Raquel Pereira Fisheries Policies and Communities

Degree in Marine Biology and Biotechnology from the Polytechnic of Leiria and Master in Aquaculture and Fisheries from the University of Algarve. In the last year of her degree, she did an internship in Iceland, at the Icelandic Orca Project, contributing to the monitoring of the killer whales population in Icelandic waters. For her master’s thesis, she studied the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Portuguese fisheries sector, which sparked her interest in fishing communities and sustainable fisheries. On the team since the end of 2022, she contributed to the characterization of AMPIC’s fishing activities. She was part of the Fish-X european project, as well as of the marine protected areas project, related with the implementation of the Nature Restoration Law, compliance with the protection objectives of marine protected areas and the prohibition of bottom trawling in those type of areas . In recent years, she has focused on working with coastal communities in the Algarve, both in relation to fishing activities and participatory processes, as well as environmental education activities.
