Webinars about Aquaculture & Sustainability

Sciaena continues to promote public debates about key issues for our society and our oceans and is organising a series of 5 webinars dedicated to aquaculture with themes ranging from its potential for sustainability, to its current state in Portugal, to fish welfare. The goal is to create an open space to share different perspectives on the role of aquaculture in food production, as well as to create a debate about what are the limitations to it and how sustainability can be achieved. There will be a total of five sessions during the month of June and July once a week, starting this Thursday (June 11).

The first of these 5 webinars, with the theme “The Role of the Ecosystem Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture Intensification”, we will have the opportunity to talk with Dra. Doris Soto, who will enlighten us about ecosystem approach and how it can be used for sustainable aquaculture intensification.

Doris Soto is a senior scientist at INCAR, the first multidisciplinary research center for sustainable aquaculture in Chile, and was an aquaculture senior officer at FAO for more than 10 years.

Globally, about 50% of the fish consumed per year comes from aquaculture, and production numbers are growing hand in hand with the demand these last decades. However, this exponential growth it’s been slower in Europe than in other regions of the world, but the potential for causing harm to the marine environment is equally distributed. Is it possible to increase fish production in aquaculture in a sustainable way? It’s what we expect to know with this series of webinars.

The webinars will generally be held in English and attendance is free, although registration is mandatory – simply send an email with your information to sciaena@sciaena.org in order to get the participation instructions.
