For the third time, between April and June 2019, Sciaena receives two students from the international master’s degree IMBRSea (International Master of Marine Biological Resources) to carry out their curricular internship.

Iga-Maria Nestorowicz was integrated in the organisation of our art exhibition dedicated to the oceans conservation, the Mar Motto, which this year makes its return to the city of Faro. Her internship consists of organising this year’s edition by establishing contacts with artists and partners, preparing materials for dissemination and awareness about marine conservation, updating the event pages and helping to promote them on social networks and the media. Iga-Maria chose to do this internship because in her opinion “The pressures we are putting on the oceans are the responsibility of all of us. Slowly, taking on the role as a marine biologist, I made the choice to try and be part of the solution ”. But also because she believes that “by presenting a wide variety of art, workshops and concerts with the aim of increasing awareness and sustainability of the ocean, we help to implement the topic locally and, consequently, make it the norm and not the exception. If we, as scientists, want to make a change, we depend on the actions of our community. This is, for me, the goal of Mar Motto – to create a trend in our community to care for the oceans ”.

Rachel Charish’s internship consists of organising a seminar on single-use plastic reduction in Portugal with the aim of creating an action plan for best practices in this area, especially at the local level, but also taking into account policies at national and European level. Rachel therefore aims to establish the priority themes to be included in the seminar, to invite stakeholders from various areas, for example, scientific research, industry, retail and the general public, to prepare dissemination and awareness materials on the topic, and help promote the event on social media and the media. What motivated Rachel to choose this internship had a lot to do with her past experiences, not only academic, but also professional as a whale watching guide and captain of a water taxi. Rachel says that all the hours spent at sea have made her “… passionate about the conservation of marine ecosystems and the understanding of how humans alter natural habitats and how species respond to anthropogenic impacts. A particular impact on marine ecosystems is the introduction of plastic and other forms of marine litter. ”
