Last week, I was at the headquarters of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) in Nairobi, Kenya, participating at the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-3) for the creation of the future Global Plastics Treaty — a legally binding instrument aimed at ending plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
The new marine protected area, designed jointly by local entities and communities, was created on November 23, 2023, by resolution of the Council of Ministers and will protect the reef of Pedra do Valado, in the Algarve, constituting a positive step for Portugal in the protection of the ocean and the populations that depend on it.
As in every year, in mid-November, two of the main Regional Fisheries Management Organizations in the Atlantic Ocean, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC), held their annual meetings.
In a critical plea, 23 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have issued a letter to fisheries ministers of the coastal states, urgently demanding action to protect the fragile marine environment of the Northeast Atlantic.
After no less than 5 years of negotiations, the European Parliament has voted in favour of adopting the new EU fisheries Control Regulation.
